Guide · Draft, first edition

Where to buy a Defender.

Four markets sell the Defender Canada never got. They do not sell the same truck, and they do not produce the same bill. Where you buy decides the steering wheel, the rust, the paperwork — and, because of how Canadian duty relief works, about six percent of the purchase price.

Duty, tax, and eligibility rules verified against primary sources 2026-07-20. Market notes verified 2026-08-14. Freight figures are observed quote ranges, flagged below.

Duty assumes a personal-use import. Freight is the observed range for RoRo or container to Halifax, 2025-2026 quotes — not a tariff. Inland delivery from Halifax is on top; the calculator itemizes it by province.

The rule that splits the map

Duty follows where you buy, not where the truck was built.

0%

A used vehicle bought in the UK or the EU and imported for personal use is deemed originating under the casual-goods regulations. No exporter origin declaration, no paperwork chase — the preferential rate on passenger vehicles is Free.

CBSA D11-4-13 · SOR/2021-66 (UK) · SOR/2017-176 (EU) · Customs Tariff ch. 87, UKT/CEUT

6.1%

The same Solihull-built truck bought in Dubai or Durban was not acquired in a treaty territory, so the deeming does not apply — and a formal origin declaration is unrealistic for a decades-old used vehicle. Plan on the MFN rate.

Customs Tariff ch. 87 · items 8703.24 / 8703.32 / 8703.33

We verified this against the tariff schedule and the regulations themselves, not a forum thread. It is the single largest lever in the sourcing decision, and it is invisible on every listing site.

What 6.1% actually costs

The penalty compounds.

Sales tax at the border is charged on the duty-paid value, so the duty is taxed too. Figures at right are for an Ontario resident (13% HST); GST-only provinces land a little lower, the 15% Atlantic provinces a little higher. A Gulf or South African listing has to beat the UK/EU price by this margin plus the freight difference before it is actually cheaper.

The markets, properly

Four markets, four different trucks.

United Kingdom

RHD0% duty
Southampton / Liverpool -> Halifax · CAD 2,400-4,500

The home market, and the deepest pool on earth: every era, both wheelbases, every factory spec, plus a specialist trade that has been rebuilding these trucks for decades. If the exact Defender you want exists anywhere, it probably exists here — often several times over, with a galvanised-chassis rebuild on offer next to an honest original.

The tax on all that choice is British weather and salted winter roads. Chassis and bulkhead corrosion is the default condition, not the exception — assume it until an inspection proves otherwise. The upside of the specialist economy is that everything is fixable and every part is a phone call away; the downside is that a shiny truck may be a cheap rebuild over a tired frame.

The other UK-specific risk is provenance. Defenders are stolen at industrial scale — NFU Mutual put its Defender theft claims near £2.5 million in 2022, rising again the year after — and stolen trucks are stripped for parts or reappear under transplanted identities. Ringer checks are not paranoia here; they are the baseline.

Worth knowing

  • Right-hand drive only. Fine in most of Canada — but a truck under 25 years old cannot be registered in Quebec, and PEI reports the same threshold.
  • Most used cars sell under the VAT margin scheme: there is no VAT line to reclaim. A dealer can zero-rate a genuine export sale if the evidence conditions are met — settle the VAT treatment in writing before agreeing on price.
  • Verify the chassis number against the V5C and the stamps on the frame itself, and run a history check. Walk away from any truck where the numbers argue.

Spain & the EU

LHD0% duty
Santander / Rotterdam -> Halifax · CAD 2,600-5,000

This is where the left-hand-drive Defenders live. Solihull built LHD trucks for the continent throughout the Td5 and TDCi years, and Spain — working trucks from farms, estates, and the interior — holds more of them than anywhere. For a Quebec or PEI buyer looking at anything under 25 years old, this market is not a preference; it is the answer.

The southern interior is dry in a way Britain never is, and the chassis show it. The trade-off is working-life honesty: many of these trucks hauled, towed, and sat in the sun. Paint and interiors weather; frames survive. That is the right direction for a truck you intend to keep.

One caveat that matters in Spain: from 1958 into the 1990s, Santana Motor built Land Rovers under licence in Andalusia, and the vehicles diverged — Santana kept leaf springs and its own engines well after Solihull moved on. A Santana is its own machine with its own following, but it is not a Defender, and parts do not always interchange. The LHD Td5 and TDCi trucks this guide covers are Solihull-built.

Worth knowing

  • Same 0% casual-goods duty treatment as the UK — the CETA regulations mirror the UK ones.
  • Expect the transaction in Spanish and the paperwork to be regional. A local inspector or buying agent earns their fee here; the verified directory is coming with M2.
  • Check the identity plates carefully on anything older than the mid-1990s — Santana and Solihull identities are not the same thing.

The Gulf (UAE)

LHD6.1% duty
Jebel Ali -> Halifax · CAD 3,500-6,500

No road salt, ever. A Gulf-kept Defender can have the cleanest chassis you will find at any price, and Dubai is one of the great vehicle-trading hubs — stock flows in from Europe, Japan, and Africa, so the selection is wider than the local market alone would suggest.

The desert takes its tax differently. Sun bakes interiors, perishes seals and bushings, and stresses cooling systems; air conditioning has usually worked hard its whole life. And because trucks arrive in Dubai from everywhere, the history file deserves the same scrutiny as the metal — where a truck spent its life matters more than where it is parked today.

Then the catch: a truck bought in the UAE pays 6.1% duty at the Canadian border, even if it left the Solihull line as a UK-market vehicle. Run the arithmetic above before falling for a Gulf price — the clean chassis is real, but it is not free.

Worth knowing

  • Left-hand drive as a rule — the second answer for Quebec and PEI buyers, after Spain.
  • Inspect for heat wear, not rot: cooling system, seals, interior plastics, and the air conditioning it will need less of in Canada.
  • Container shipping from Jebel Ali is the longest common corridor after Durban — the freight range reflects it.

South Africa

RHD6.1% duty
Durban -> Halifax · CAD 4,000-7,000

South Africa is a Defender country in its own right. Land Rovers were assembled locally from knocked-down kits at Rosslyn, outside Pretoria, and the truck earned its keep on farms and in the bush for decades. The highveld is dry, the 4x4 culture is serious, and well-kept examples with long single-ownership histories are a real feature of the market.

It is also the home of specs that exist nowhere else. The best story is the BMW-engined Defender 2.8i of 1997-2000 — a petrol straight-six truck built in small numbers, 632 90s and 410 110s, during the years BMW owned Land Rover and South Africa assembled both. One has never been sold new in Europe or North America.

The bill works like the Gulf: 6.1% duty, plus the longest freight corridor of the four. You do not buy from South Africa to save money. You buy from South Africa because the truck — its spec, its history, its condition — justifies the corridor.

Worth knowing

  • Right-hand drive, like the UK — the Quebec and PEI constraint applies to anything under 25 years old.
  • Export paperwork (police clearance among it) is standard practice for South African sellers and agents — build the lead time into the plan.
  • The 2.8i and other local specs have their own following; expect collector pricing on the rare stuff, not farm pricing.

The short version

Which market, then.

You live in Quebec or PEI and the truck is under 25 years oldSpain or the Gulf. A left-hand-drive truck sidesteps the right-hand-drive rules entirely — this is a sourcing decision, not a warning label.
You want the cleanest possible chassisThe Gulf, South Africa, or the dry Spanish interior. Price the 6.1% duty in first for the Gulf and South Africa — it usually costs more than the freight difference.
You want the widest choice and the easiest parts trailThe UK. Budget for the chassis you will actually get, and check provenance twice — the theft economy is real.
You want a spec that exists nowhere elseSouth Africa. Start with the BMW-engined 2.8i story below.

True in all four markets

The ground rules travel with you.

  • Fifteen years from the manufacture date — not the model year — is the federal admissibility line, and at fifteen years the truck also skips the RIV program and its fee. Bring proof of the build date to the border.
  • Sales tax is collected at the border for residents of Ontario and the Atlantic HST provinces — the full HST, wherever the truck enters Canada. Everyone else pays 5% GST at the border and settles provincial tax at registration.
  • A pre-purchase inspection is not optional in a market with no auction-sheet system. CAD 300-800 buys the only condition intelligence that exists in this corridor — cheap against a wired deposit you cannot recall.
