The Defenders Canada can have.
Between 1998 and 2011 the Defender ran three diesel engines. Canada admits vehicles at fifteen years from manufacture; the United States waits for twenty-five. That ten-year gap falls across this era in a particular way — the trucks the American market cannot touch until the 2030s are, on the evidence, the better ones.

Canadian status describes what the age evidence supports as of August 2026 and nothing more. Federal admissibility is not provincial registration, and neither is a verdict on a particular vehicle.
The line that decides the era
Fifteen years, counted from the month of manufacture.
The exemption runs from the date of manufacture, not the model year and not the registration date. A truck first registered in 2012 may have been built in 2011, and a 2011 model year truck may have been built in 2010. The border asks for proof of the manufacture date, so the build plate is the document that matters.
Applied to this era in August 2026: every Td5 clears the age threshold on the evidence, as does every 2.4 TDCi built to August 2011. Trucks built in the closing months of 2011 are month-dependent — they cross the line on their own anniversaries through the end of the year. That is a question about one build plate, not about the model.
Federal admissibility is presented separately from provincial registration throughout this site because the second does not follow from the first. Quebec restricts right-hand-drive operation below twenty-five years, which points Quebec buyers in this era toward the left-hand-drive trucks in Spain and the Gulf rather than toward the deeper British market.
Why this era, and why now
The improvements landed on the wrong side of the American line.
The early Td5 carried two faults capable of ending the engine: a shearing oil pump drive and a head that could shuffle on weak dowels. Land Rover resolved both, and the post-2002 engine with the revised head is the one specialists describe as genuinely reliable.
The twenty-five-year rule means the American market is currently open to Defenders built up to August 2001 — which is to say, open to the early engine and closed to the improved one. The 15P Td5 waits until 2027 and beyond. The 2.4 TDCi waits until the 2030s. For roughly the next decade the trucks in this era with the faults designed out are available to Canadian buyers and to European buyers, and not to the largest market on the continent.
We are not making a claim about what that does to prices. It is a statement about what is available to whom, and for how long.

Everything after that date in this era is closed to American buyers, in some cases for another decade. The Canadian threshold cleared the whole era years ago.
The engines, properly
What each one is, and what decides whether a given truck is worth the crossing.
Td5 — 10P (1998-2002)
The original in-house five-cylinder. Two faults on this engine end engines rather than inconvenience them, and both were designed out within a couple of years.
What to check
Td5 — 15P (2002-2007)
The same engine with the two structural faults resolved: revised cylinder head, metal dowels, a flashable ECU. Specialists generally treat the post-2002 unit as the reliable one. It inherits the harness fault and adds a cooling-system pattern.

2.4 TDCi — Puma (2007-2011)
The Ford Duratorq four-cylinder that replaced the Td5 in spring 2007, when the Td5 could no longer meet Euro emissions rules. More torque, six gears, a quieter cabin. The engine is not the problem on these trucks — the driveline is.
What to check
The short version
Read the engine number. Pressure-test the cooling system. Inspect the coupling.
On a Td5, the engine number tells you whether the two engine-ending faults were designed out or merely survived so far. On a TDCi, the gearbox-to-transfer-box coupling and the clutch slave are the two items that turn an ordinary purchase into a gearbox-out bill. Everything else in this guide is a question of condition and price.
None of it is answerable from a listing. Photographs do not show a sheared oil pump drive or a worn spline. This is the point in the process where an inspection on the ground stops being optional.
